A Guide to Improve Your SEO

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a valuable marketing tool that drives organic traffic and potential consumers to your web page.  SEO is a must for small businesses to maximize their online market.  Most people click one of the first few search results, so higher rankings usually lead to more visits to your website.  SEO traffic is usually consistent unlike some other organic marketing tactics.  Here is how you can get started.

Step 1: Set KPIs and Goals

Key performance indicators (KPIs) is a quantifiable metric that reflects how well a business is achieving its stated goals and objectives.  When setting your KPIs and goals, you need to make sure they are S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound).  Making your goals specific will make it easier to measure success.

Step 2: Analyze Your Current Website Setup

By analyzing your current website, also known as a website audit, you’ll be able to take a step back and look at your website.  This allows you to determine what you think is good for your website and what things may need to change.  Diving deeper into your website allows you to look at it from a customer’s perspective.

Step 3: Topic Creation and KeyWord Research

Keyword research is the process by which you research popular search terms people type into search engines like Google, and include them strategically in your content so that your content appears higher on a search engine results page (SERP). Keyword research is a fundamental practice in search engine optimization (SEO).

Step 4: Establish a Pillar Content Strategy

Content pillars are an essential part of a brand’s content strategy and they serve a fundamental purpose: they provide a comprehensive, authoritative exploration of a topic that a reader can get everything they need on that subject in one place.

Step 5: Perform an SEO Audit

By performing an SEO audit you’ll be able to identify any missed SEO opportunities and remedy any misguided or poorly executed SEO pitfalls (e.g. keyword stuffing, exact match anchor text links, etc.) throughout the content of your website.  It will also allow you to refocus some marketing efforts that may not be performing as well as you anticipated.

Step 6: Work On Audit Findings

Now, you need to apply what you have found during the SEO Audit.  By finding issues as quickly as possible, you can fix problems that prevent your site from achieving its full potential.  Remove any clunky programming that is slowing down your page performance or making it difficult for Google to render your site properly.

Step 7: Work On Local SEO

46% of all searches in Google have “local intent” (Search Engine Roundtable). So it’s clear that local searches make up a huge chunk of the SEO world. And if you can get your local business in front of these searches, there’s a good chance they’ll be walking through your door a few minutes later.

Step 8: Work On Back Links

Backlinks are one of the top factors in Google’s organic ranking algorithm, so building and managing a successful backlink profile is a major part of SEO.  Utilize the Link Building Tool which is designed to help the research and outreach process of gaining new links.
